Sony Tablet S

It has taken two years for Sony to enter the tablet market, and in that time every manufacturer and their budget Taiwanese spin-off have colluded to fill the tablet market with dross.

This presents both and opportunity and a threat to Sony, and while there are many sub-standard tablets on the market, some great work has been done by a few companies, and there's now a handful of successful, great value Android tablets to choose from.

You can check out our Android Tablet round-up to see how this slate.ide from the obvious iPad 2, which is the gold standard of design and usability, Samsung has unleashed a flurry of tablets, from the excellent Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, to the imminent Galaxy Tab 7.7 which boasts a vibrant AMOLED display.

Other notable competitors also include the Motorola Xoom, which is now aggressively priced at £349, and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, and soon-to-be-released Eee Pad Slider, which both boast full, physical QWERTY keyboards.

To launch into this crowded marketplace, Sony had to release something different, and with the Sony Tablet S and the forthcoming Tablet P, that's exactly what its done.

The Sony Tablet S is a curvaceous, wedge-shaped tablet, which looks as if it has been folded out of a single piece of textured black plastic. It's thicker at one side, with a rounded edge, as if you'd taken a thin paper back, and folded the cover back on itself to really get stuck into the story.

Aside from making it look different to every other tablet on the market, the Sony Tablet S's unique appearance isn't purely aesthetic. The design means that typing is comfortable when laid flat on a table or desk, which is a flaw in most flat tablets.

The new HP TouchPad....

The webOS-powered HP TouchPad was released in the beginning of July and after spending over 15 minutes with one at Best Buy I was planning to skip this tablet. HP then had some crazy deals where you could find the 16GB model for $300 and a Twitter buddy found a deal on Craigslist so I jumped on one for $325. After spending the weekend using the TouchPad for several hours, I have to say it is better than the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook, but even at just over $300 I still can’t recommend this tablet to anyone and the iPad is all I can tell people to buy when they ask about 10 inch tablets.

FYI, this TouchPad I purchased does have the latest OS update so my issues below are not due to an old firmware. Just this morning I sat there for about a minute with the Wall Street Journal app open and no taps or swipes registering as the TouchPad just sat there being unresponsive. Pressing the button did take it to the home screen, but there was no display responses when touching the screen within an app.

Hardware

The HP TouchPad is not an elegant tablet and is a chunky beast with a super glossy back.It makes up for some of my hardware concerns with the rounded corners, decent stereo speakers, and very slick Touchstone charging dock. The iPad and iPad 2, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and even the Motorola Xoom are all better hardware. I don’t understand why HP couldn’t have released a tablet with a slimmer profile, especially after they saw the first generation iPad and knew another would be coming soon. The TouchPad is 0.54 of an inch thick while the iPad 2 is 0.34 and the original iPad is 0.5. The TouchPad also weighs in at 1.6 pounds compared to the iPad 2 at 1.3 pounds. I am not too bothered by the weight since a 10 inch tablet is going to have some heft to it, but the thickness bothers me when compared to my sleek iPad 2.

Operating system

webOS is a very slick UI with a great multi-tasking design through the cards and I do like it on the HP TouchPad, but even with just a few apps loaded up I have been seeing “too many cards open” errors and am beginning to think that Apple and Microsoft may have multi-tasking better designed for today’s mobile devices. iOS and Windows Phone 7 multi-tasking essentially freezes the background apps when you go elsewhere and I find double-tapping and selecting an open app on the bottom row of my iPad to be a much more efficient means of jumping between apps.

Finalist Sky News

Sky’s array of mobile apps have always been at the cutting edge, but the massive new Sky News app for iPad is its best yet.

The beautifully designed, video-heavy app allows you to cherry pick the hottest news from the day, just like you can while using the red button functionality on your TV. The timeline enables you to catch up if you’ve missed breaking developments.

While the on-demand service is constantly updated there’s also a live video feed from the channel which you can pause and rewind à la Sky Plus.

If that’s not enough there’s also a host of galleries and text-based stories from the Sky News website. Best of all it’s free, at least so far.

Future Bracelet for our personal life...

The dream of having our own holographic wrist phone is not too far off actually. A designer group called Kingyo Design has already spent some time coming up with a neat user interface that we would be able to, in time, produce to be fitted into the wrist phone. As you might have figured out, it won’t happen anytime soon since the technology to create holographic images isn’t cost effective enough yet to be produced in any large quantity.

Campus of the future main indGE 5784

For the students of the future, here’s the most avant-garde yet green back pack that will assist in studying and keeping in touch with the world too. Carlos Suarez is the brain behind this ‘ahead of its time’ kinda project schemed for the Campus of the Future exposition in Hawaii. The idea was to showcase innovative products and education systems for the near future. Since the sponsor, Herman Miler, was adamant on designing the future back pack for a specific field of study, Carlos chose to design a 3 product system for the future Environmental Engineer.

campus of the future 2 PCLuD 5784

The first is an Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) that includes satellite phone, GPS, and satellite internet. The other products support the first such as a backpack with solar panels that recharge the UMPC and a tent that uses solar energy to erect its memory metal frame and power a flexible LCD fro classroom communication.

This completely sustainable green back pack will allow students or research teams to set up camp in a remote location while remaining in contact with the outside world.

 campus of the future 3 Iw43y 5784

Targeting the environmentalists, archeologists, biologists and anyone else who needs to conduct studies in a remote location, this backpack is still a concept and it doesn’t seem to be hitting the production stage any sooner.

So guys we will have to make do with our share of simpler eco-friendly alternatives available in today’s times.

Power Electronices ..

In the future power electronics for power transmission, power generation and energy storage will be required for higher voltages and power levels than are achievable today.
Diamond Electronics
Diamond is one of the most promising materials for extreme performance electronic applications, such as high power, high temperature, and high frequency devices. Diamond has excellent mechanical, thermal, electrical and chemical properties. It is the hardest known material and it has the highest electrical breakdown field, the highest room temperature thermal conductivity and the widest electromagnetic radiation transparency range of any material, as well as a wide bandgap and high carrier mobilities. Recent advances in the synthesis of device-quality, single crystal diamond by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) have opened up the possibility to make efficient diamond-based electronic devices.

We focus our research on investigating electronic properties of diamond and to make diamond devices such as diamond diodes and field-effect transistors for high voltages or switching frequencies. Diodes and switches are key components in power electronic systems, which cover a wide range of applications, from power supplies to power distribution and transmission. High frequency devices have many applications within information technology and microwave systems

Radiation effects on power devices
Power devices are sensitive to neutrons created in cosmic radiation, and this leads to fatal hardware failure. At TSL, commercial testing of such components, as well as fundamental physics research on the nuclear reactions ultimately causing these effects, are undertaken.

Apple iCloud:

With Apple revealing iCloud price details along with the beta version of iCloud.com, now seems like a good time to explain what the service is to anyone who missed Apple's announcement in June.

iCloud is so much more than a hard drive in the sky. It’s the effortless way to access just about everything on all your devices. iCloud stores your content so it’s always accessible from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.* It gives you instant access to your music, apps, latest photos, and more. And it keeps your email, contacts, and calendars up to date across all your devices. No syncing required. No management required. In fact, no anything required. iCloud does it all for you.
features :

New purchases. Automatically everywhere.

iCloud automatically downloads any new music purchase to all your devices over Wi-Fi — or over 3G if you choose. Which means you can buy a song from iTunes on your iPad at home, and find it waiting for you on your iPhone during your morning commute. All without having to sync.

Your past purchases. Available on all your devices.
Now you can download music and TV shows you’ve previously purchased to all your devices. When you buy from iTunes, iCloud stores your purchase history. So you can see what you’ve bought — no matter which device you bought it on. You can access your purchase history from the iTunes Store on your Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. And since you already own the songs, albums, or TV shows in your purchase history, you can tap to download them to any of your devices.
iTunes Match
If you want all the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for music you haven’t purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. It lets you store your entire collection, including music you’ve ripped from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes. For just $24.99 a year.2
Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to your iCloud library for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Since there are more than 18 million songs in the iTunes Store, most of your music is probably already in iCloud. All you have to upload is what iTunes can’t match. Which is much faster than starting from scratch. And all the music iTunes matches plays back at 256-Kbps iTunes Plus quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.

Google+ attracts 25 million visitors

Google Inc's new social network has attracted 25 million users, making it the fastest website to reach that audience size, according to data released on Tuesday by comScore.

Google+, launched in late June, had 25 million unique visitors as of July 24 and is growing at a rate of roughly one million visitors a day, com Score noted in a presentation.

In contrast, it took Facebook about three years to attract 25 million visitors, while Twitter took just over 30 months, according to com Score.

While the data show Google's latest attempt at breaking into social networking has started strongly, it may not mean the project is a long-term success. MySpace grew to 25 million unique visitors in less than two years -- faster than Facebook or Twitter. However, it's lost a lot of visitors in the past year, com Score data show.

The United States had more than 6 million unique visitors, and India more than 3.6 million, the data show,Canada and the UK had around 1 million unique visitors each, Germany over 920,000 and Brazil just over 780,000. France and Taiwan each had around 500,000.

Samsung Galaxy S2 White on 1st September

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is set to get another flavour on the market – it’s going to be available in white. This is the same 16GB model as the black version but just in a different colour. This is one of the best selling Android smartphones of 2011.
The hot-selling Samsung Galaxy S2 has only been available in black so far but still managed 5 million sales in just 85 days and 3G see the white version boosting sales even more.
This frankly earth-shattering news comes via online retailer Clove, which has put up a placeholder describing the new device as the ‘The popular Samsung Galaxy S2 in white’.

There are several key differences to between the white Galaxy S2 and the original black version – it’s likely the front plate will be white, along with the home button as well. On top of this the rest of the chassis and feasibly the rear of the phone will also be in white too, although this is, as yet, unconfirmed
